Banjul, The Gambia – Aliu Suleman Kane, Gambia’s biggest business mogul has some harsh words for and sage advice for today’s young entrepreneurs. The man known as “Africa’s Donald Trump” is on yet another tare about something the rest of us may be a little more dispassionate about: Business and fashion.

image“These kids today, they don’t know how to dress for success,” he says. “Young men are walking around with their drawers showing; young women don’t put grease on their legs before coming to an interview.”

He clicked his tongue for effect.

“It’s just pathetic!”

To remedy the problem, Mr. Kane has come out with a new line of fashionable business wear. He was wearing one of his signature trousers when we sat down to talk to him.

“You see, your pants have to be of an acceptable length, and must sit above the navel,” he explicates. “The tie cannot be too short, or else it looks ridiculous. Finally, a leather belt with embellishments will give you a personal sense of style.”

To cap it all off, a young professional must exude an aura of confidence and walk into their enterprise with a smile.

“You don’t own as many kiosks and small girls to peddle your goods around as I do by being dressed shabbily.”

He has some final thoughts as to why he thinks Africa has not prospered as a whole to this point.

“Well, I think it’s because the West sees us as buffoons.  We blindly copy their dress and style of speaking, and abandon our own ways. The only way to be successful in business is to be the very opposite of your competition. You have to be quick-quick! And nimble. And I think my new line of trousers says ‘Hey. I’m here, and I’m ready to be taken seriously.’
